A visit to the dentist should be fun!

It is very important that a visit to the dentist is fun and children are made most welcome in our practice. They should never feel nervous and for that reason we try to ‘be friends’ before we get involved with active treatment. We try to see children from about three years of age and introduce them to all of us and dental equipment. We try to eliminate nervousness before it even happens.

Prevention is always better than cure and our routine care is focused on diet and oral hygiene advice. We remind the children that 80% of our mouths is not teeth and we need to clean all the pink bits too! Children should be encouraged to brush their teeth and gums in the morning and again before they go to bed. They should learn that sugar is bad ‘and gives the germ bugs energy to make holes in their teeth’.

We especially recommend fissure sealants for children at six years or so to protect the new adult back teeth. The sealant forms a hard shield that keeps food and bacteria from getting into the grooves in the teeth and causing decay.

Our dentists are well known for their care of especially nervous children. They are qualified and experienced in even the most complex children’s dentistry for example stainless steel crowns etc.

Some children are especially nervous and in these few cases we may use ‘Happy gas ‘  – Nitrous Oxide Sedation. Usually it’s a good idea to do a ‘trial run ‘ with this method in advance of actual dental treatment.

If you’re not happy with how your teeth look, we can fix it!

It’s often said that a smile can make the whole world brighter. Facial Aesthetics can greatly improve your appearance and self esteem. The Science of Dermatology and Cosmetic dentistry has moved at pace and Dr Rebecca Ngo is especially gifted in this area of dentistry. (Instagram: Dr Rebecca Ngo).

Improvements to your smile might include Invisalign Orthodontics or tooth whitening. Other corrective treatments such as Dentine Bonding or Porcelain Veneers might also be considered.

Anti Aging treatments such as Anti Wrinkle injections ( eg :Botox ) or high quality Dermal fillers are additional options to consider.

Cosmetic dentistry can greatly enhance your appearance and self-esteem.

If you’re not happy with how your teeth look then we can fix it! We can straighten, whiten or reshape your teeth or close unsightly spaces.

We use very high-quality Zirconium Porcelain Veneers to align and whiten teeth where composite bonding might not be suitable. The tooth is prepared to accept a remarkably thin porcelain layer which is bonded to the surface below. The effect is remarkable and perfect.  Composite Veneers are a cost effective alternative where composite resin is used instead of laboratory made porcelain. The effect is excellent but not always as good in the long term and never as highly polished or perfect.

Sometimes we use a combination of cosmetic techniques to best restore a smile. For example, Porcelain veneers with some composite bonding and overall tooth whitening to finish.

‘A smile is a curve that sets everything straight’

A protective outer shell or casing that fits over the prepared tooth to give it strength, improve its appearance and restore the shape and function of a natural tooth.

Crown is a protective outer shell or casing that fits over the prepared tooth to give it strength, improve its appearance and restore the shape and function of a natural tooth. A crown is required when a tooth is badly decayed or broken, or very heavily filled. The tooth is carefully prepared, and a digital impression is taken using our 3D scanning machine. Our skilled dental technician fabricates a Zirconium Porcelain crown to fit snugly over the tooth. The colour is made to match that of the adjacent teeth and the crown is  permanently cemented.

Two visits are usually required with three weeks between the visits. In cases of particularly broken down or root treated teeth a cast metal or fibreglass post may be required to improve the strength of the tooth and to support the crown. This can only be done in root treated teeth so a root filling may need to be done first if the tooth is still vital.

Closing Spaces / Replacing Missing teeth is important in order to balance your bite, restore function and to improve your smile. If several teeth are missing, the remaining teeth come under more pressure, which can lead to chipped teeth, broken fillings and even jaw problems. A partial denture is the simplest way to replace missing teeth. However, some people find dentures uncomfortable or prefer to look at alternatives like bridgework or dental Implants.

Bridgework is where we use a number of crowns to span across a gap and replace the missing teeth. These fused crowns are attached to the adjacent teeth on either side of the gap. This may suit a patient with only one or two teeth missing and perhaps prefers not to wear a denture.

Dental Implants are now a routine option to replace one or more teeth without disturbing any other teeth. The result is excellent, entirely predictable, and likely to last a lifetime.

A Dental implant is an artificial root (Titanium or Ceramic) that is placed in the space in the jaw bone where the tooth used to be. It is left for three months to integrate with the bone so that it can then be prepared to carry the final crown. The surgical process is usually done under local anaesthetic or intravenous sedation if preferred.

Sedation can be the best technique for the complete control of anxiety in dentistry.

Intravenous Sedation IV is the best technique for the complete control of anxiety in dentistry. A sedative drug (Midazolam) induces a hypnotic semi-conscious state and is a choice for the treatment of very nervous patients. IV sedation is not a general anaesthetic but is a safe more controlled alternative.

Will I be asleep? You will be deeply relaxed throughout the procedure and lose all sense of what’s going on and the time involved. You may even fall asleep but that is not the purpose of sedation. Partial or complete memory loss is another effect of sedation so that in any event it will appear that you were indeed asleep during the procedure.

Do I still need a needle? Although you will be completely relaxed/asleep local anaesthetic is required for the dental procedure, but you will not be aware of it and will not remember it being given.

Is IV sedation safe? Yes it extremely safe when carried out by a specially trained dentist. However it should not be used during pregnancy and some other medical conditions for example impaired lung  kidney or liver function would rule out sedation as a treatment option.

How will I be afterwards? Can I drive home? You will be very happy when the procedure is finished. But you will be drowsy and still under the influence of the drug. You will need an escort to bring you home. You are completely unfit to drive and should not attempt to do so. The next day you will be fine!

Cost of IV sedation? The cost per sedation visit is €250. This is payable at the time of booking the appointment.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation (sometimes called Gas and Air ) is a  safe and effective relaxant used to help treat very nervous adult patients. It greatly reduces anxiety, enhances analgesia, and improves effective communication between the dentist and the patient. Dr Niall Conaty and Dr Emma Rose McMahon offer Nitrous Oxide Sedation treatment.

In many cases antiwrinkle injections and dermal fillers are as important to aesthetic dentistry as a beautiful healthy and white smile.

Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are just as important as a beautiful healthy and white smile. The soft tissues of your face help to frame the smile and make you look younger and fitter. As we get older these treatments help to maintain our appearance so you look and feel great . The injections help restore the rested confident appearance of your face and safely eliminate frown lines or crows feet around the eyes.

In Ireland, anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers should only be offered by either doctors or dentists and our understanding and  knowledge of facial anatomy helps ensure successful treatment.

How do the  injections work? Anti-aging treatment involves injecting very small amounts of a protein produced by the Clostridium Botulinum bacterium using a very fine needle into the small muscles of the face. The injections are almost painless but sometimes a topical numbing gel can be used. The injected protein inhibits the transmission of pulses from the nerve to the muscle and prevents the muscle from contracting and forming wrinkles.  The skin around these muscles becomes nice and smooth about three to five days after injection.

How long does it last? For the first few treatments results last 3-4months, but after that you will likely be able to extend the treatment intervals to 5-6 months and probably reduce the amount of product you require.

How will I look when the effect wears off? Your face will simply return to its previous appearance. If you use anti-wrinkle agent for a number of years and then you stop the muscles will have learned to relax on their own and you will end up looking a little better than when you began.

Is the treatment safe? Clostridium Botulinum protein has been safely used for cosmetic treatments for over 30 years. It has other medical uses too such as in the treatment of chronic bladder dysfunction, excessive sweating and other conditions and is entirely safe.

Composite Bonding is a simple and cost-effective way to reshape teeth.

Composite bonding is a way to reshape teeth by carefully adding a composite resin material to the prepared tooth and polishing it to its new shape. It is a great way to easily and quickly transform the way your teeth look.

We use very high-quality Zirconium Porcelain veneers to align and whiten teeth where composite bonding might not be suitable. The tooth is prepared to accept a remarkably thin porcelain layer which is bonded to the surface below. The effect is remarkable and perfect. Composite veneers are a cost effective alternative where composite bonding is used instead of laboratory made porcelain. The effect is excellent but not always as good in the long term and never as perfect as the highly polished porcelain.

Sometimes we use a combination of cosmetic techniques to best restore a smile. For example, Porcelain veneers with some composite bonding and overall tooth whitening to finish.

‘Nothing you wear is more important than a smile.’
