Next Generation Dentistry

A reflection on twenty-five years in Ratoath.

I could never have imagined in 1998 how the village of Ratoath would develop into the small town it is today. It was then a population of just 1,300 residents. Today it is home to nearly 12,000 residents and continuing to grow. The friendly Dublin Meath rivalry and shared aspirations for its development are part of its charm. It has great sporting, cultural and community activities and facilities unimaginable in 1998. The sense of optimism and community spirit in the Village is outstanding. Ratoath is a wonderful place to live.

From the day I saw my first patient in Ratoath I never looked back. My move here was the second-best decision I ever made. The best years of my career have been spent in this village and I have always strived to provide the very best our profession has to offer and make Ratoath Dental one of the finest around. But just like our Village much has changed in dentistry over that time. Standing still was never an option.

I used to marvel at how my father did things. He qualified in 1953. Dentistry then was mostly about extracting teeth and swapping them for false ones. I was the next generation dentist, full of bright ideas and new techniques. I was sure I would be a better dentist. But my confidence was somewhat ill placed. Good dentistry always starts with kindness and empathy. And listening helps too. With friendly professional staff, comfortable surroundings and a friendly welcoming smile the patient might feel less nervous. We try to get the little things right. I’m still in agreement with my father. ’All you really need is kindness and a sense of humour and you’re on the way to being a dentist.’

Ratoath Dental and Implant Centre is now a five-surgery practice with a team of sixteen. As well as the traditional we have moved into the digital era. Smile design including facial aesthetics, composite bonding, Botox / fillers tooth whitening etc are entirely normal. We can use predictive technology to show the result before we begin. Implants can now be placed in previously impossible situations. CT scanning and guided technology can help guide Implants into the perfect final position. Bone can be generated where there may be little or none. There is now almost no mouth that cannot be restored. The most nervous patients can be sedated in a safe and comfortable environment.

I graduated from Dublin University in 1984. I was a young gun then. I have had the most wonderful career in dentistry and I am so grateful to all our patients. I’ll still be around the place, keeping an eye on all things in Ratoath Dental and Implant Centre. But now it is time for the next Generation. Thank you for everything.

Dr. Sarah Ngo

About me

My philosophy boils down to one core principle: effective dental care is not just about fixing teeth; it’s about understanding and respecting the individuals behind those smiles. My enthusiasm lies in delivering outstanding dental care by actively listening to my patients’ concerns and preferences, coupled with a steadfast commitment to continuous learning.

I am committed to staying current with the swift progress in the field of dentistry, actively exploring emerging techniques like digital imagery, facial aesthetics, the extensive potential in implantology, and smile makeovers.

I hold a Bachelor of Dental Science from Trinity College Dublin where I gained a solid foundation in all aspects of dental techniques, diagnostics, and treatment. While on my Erasmus program at the University of Oslo, I developed a keen interest in special care dentistry, reinforcing my steadfast dedication to delivering dentistry that is free from anxiety.

I try to maintain a stress free environment in the clinic as well as out of it! To decompress, I enjoy composing songs, rock climbing, hiking and yoga (to keep in touch with my zen side).

I look forward to being part of the Ratoath community and I hope that with my friendly, honest and happy personality I can build lasting relationships with my patients, young and maybe a little older!
